Meet Maria

Hi, I’m Maria. Thank you so much for coming to my site.  I am glad you are here.

If you are anything like me, you know that change isn’t easy and life has its fair share of hard knocks.  I can honestly say sometimes I shake my head when I think of what I have experienced over the years.  But that’s life, at times we have amazing moments and other times we get curve balls thrown at us that can be overwhelming. In fact, sometimes it can reach the point where we feel that we can’t take one more thing.

My philosphy as a therapist is that I am here to help you figure out what is not working, what is causing your pain, to help create a plan with you and work together to get you where you want to go. Strange as it sounds, sometimes I see myself as a detective.  Each person I work with has a unique story and different needs.  Together we solve the mystery of what is preventing happiness and causing all that distress.  Then we roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Is it hard?  Can be.  Painful?  Sometimes. Fun?  I can’t help it, I love my job and I enjoy my time with the people I work with.  So, believe it or not, we can actually laugh and enjoy the process together. There is nothing wrong with having some fun while we work.  So, yes, therapy can be hard work.  But I have been doing this for a long time.  And I know when I am working with someone and their life shifts and I can see it and they can feel it, the sense of moving forward, of being alive, of surviving something awful, or of mastering a new skill…. well, getting that feeling about your life is worth a lot. And it is worth a lot to me to be a part of it.  After all these years, it still feels like magic when I work with someone who has survived some trauma, or begins to recover from  depression or anxiety or just needs to find a way to communicate with their child in a way that works and suddenly it all starts to come together. Its an amazing feeling.

I knew I was going to be a therapist by the time I was a teenager (weird, I know).  That was a long time ago, and I consider it a privledge to be a part of so much change and healing and growth over the years.

I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you and see if we might be a good fit to work together.  Please feel free to go to my contact page and send me an email or give me a call. Or just email me here.

What else do I do?

I am a professor of psychology at FSCJ. In the class, my students and I have a blast.  Together we laugh, play and learn.  My goal is not only to teach my students psychology but to teach them to be better critical thinkers, to find the joy in learning and to, quite frankly, live life to its fullest.

I own a wellness website called Simply Put Together with tips for living ranging from organizational skills to handling relatives during the holidays.  One of the most popular pages on my site is my inspirational quotes page.  In particular, my quotes helping people who have lost a beloved pet has brought together a community of support for close to 200,000 site visitors.

Speaking –  I teach so I love speaking, from corporations to non-profits to radio shows, I have been interviewed on NPR, for the Jacksonville Times Union and am a regular contributor on Army Wife Talk Radio.

My credentials include

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (Florida)

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (Illinois)

National Board Certified Counselor (NCC)

I worked with Rush University Medical Hospital in Chicago for twelve years as a licensed psychotherapist and corporate consultant.  I have worked in the psychiatric setting which was a great learning experience and have also worked with homeless and runaway teens including teen moms. All of my experiences have taught me along the way to have greater understanding and compassion, to remember to laugh and to know that true happiness and joy is there for us, once we know the way.
